Risperdal Gynecomastia Causes Depression Symptoms

Johnson and Johnson is currently still involved in litigation regarding one of their premiere drugs, Risperdal, and the medical links that have been made between this drug and gynecomastia or male breast growth. The litigation stems from this drug being marketed to children without FDA approval, which is very illegal and unethical, this drug was given to children while the side effects had not yet been tested for patients that young. In many of these cases, especially teenage boys, Risperdal gynecomastia was formed and is unable to be resolved with out costly corrective surgery or intensive testosterone treatment. Often times these surgeries are considered cosmetic and are not covered by many insurance companies and also may cost up to $3,500 out of pocket. As risperdal is one of the few antipsychotics that is covered by medicaid and though this surgery may seem like it is at the lower end of the cost spectrum, will likely remain out of reach for most of these patients. Especially considering these growths are an effect from a medicine that they were prescribed to help them, not ruin their lives.

The issue of Risperdal gynecomastia is very real and it is being found that many of these cases are having other than physical symptoms associated with this side effect. Teenage boys are having enough issues dealing with puberty, though they are growing up, they are still children and many of them may not have the capacity to handle all of this added stress. Not to mention the social ramifications of a teenage boy walking the halls of a high school with breasts, as it is common knowledge that bullying is very real in schools and has even been expanded with the premiere of social media less than 10 years ago. These are our children that are being tormented by the public and also by themselves. They are going through such a personal issue, yet they receive no understanding from their peers and often times their parents. It is not as though there are Risperdal gynecomastia support groups that are readily available as it is a fairly common, yet misunderstood ailment, so there they are left alone with nothing but their negative thoughts about themselves.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for these patients suffering with Risperdal gynecomastia. As of September 2014, there were just over 600 plaintiffs involved in this litigation and the number is increasing by the day. The settlement at that point was looking to be about $2.2 billion dollars and if that was split evenly with this low amount of plaintiffs, that would be just over $3.6 million a piece. As this is settlement is still under negotiation and the plaintiffs are coming into the light more and more, this number will likely change, but one thing is for sure, Johnson and Johnson is not going to be getting off easy in the least as far as accountability is concerned.

Our attorneys at Band Gates & Dramis are here to support you and your family. Just concentrate on your recovery and don’t worry about payment until you receive your settlement. For a FREE consultation either fill out this form to the right or call us today.

What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is a psychiatric medication, belonging to the class of atypical antipsychotics, also known as second generation antipsychotics.

Risperdal is a brand name of its generic form risperdone.

Risperdal was originally FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults in 1993.

Over the years, Risperdal has received additional FDA approval for other uses.

It is also now available for the treatment of acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder for people aged 10 and up, schizophrenia in adolescents 13-17 years old, and for the irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders for children aged 5-17.

It is manufactured and sold by Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Risperdal works by affecting brain chemistry. It interferes with certain neurotransmitters, namely serotonin and dopamine.

Neurotransmitters are chemicals used to the brain to facilitate communication between the brain cells, which are called neurons.

The human brain is still largely a mystery to scientists, and little is known conclusively about how psychiatric drugs such as Risperdal work.

We know that Risperdal blocks the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, restoring a chemical balance in the brain. This balance results in desirable psychological or behavioral changes.

Risperdal is one of Janssen’s best selling drugs, and has brought in billions of dollars in profits for this pharmaceutical corporation.

Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuit Introduction

As with all pharmaceutical medications, Risperdal can cause side effects.

However, there is one side effect many Risperdal users were not anticipating: Risperdal gynecomastia.

In males, Risperdal can cause the swelling of breast tissue. This swelling of tissue can be very painful, and can lead to the development of male breasts. This condition may happen on one or both sides of the chest, and does not always occur evenly.

This is a condition known as gynecomastia.

In some cases, Risperdal gynecomastia can even lead to nipple lactation.

Risperdal gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of male and female hormones.

Studies have shown that Risperdal causes elevated levels of a female hormone called prolactin. Normally, prolactin is used to help with the lactation process in breastfeeding mothers.

In males, high levels of prolactin can lead to the swelling of breast tissue, a clinical condition known as gynecomastia.

Risperdal gynecomastia causes embarrassment, social problems, and other adverse or negative psychological effects.

In adolescents, gynecomastia has been shown to adversely affect a boy’s eating habits, social functioning, self-esteem, as well as other aspects of their mental and physical health.

Risperdal gynecomastia sometimes goes away on its own. Treatment for Risperdal gynecomastia can include hormone therapy or surgery to remove the swollen breast tissue.

Risperdal Lawsuits

Risperdal is in the legal hot seat, as several different Risperdal lawsuits and claims have been filed.

Several Risperdal lawsuits have already been settled.

There have been many different types of Risperdal lawsuits.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals previously settled in federal court for $2.2 billion for illegally marketing and promoting the drug.

The Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits are civil actions, in which individuals who have experienced Risperdal gynecomastia are filing individual claims. The Risperdal lawsuit is not technically a class action lawsuit, and it will likely be organized as a multidistrict litigation.

Claimants in the Risperdal lawsuit allege that they experienced gynecomastia as a direct result of taking Risperdal.

Furthermore, Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to warn them about this Risperdal side effect.

Many Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits have already been filed with success, resulting in Risperdal settlements.

Risperdal settlements are monetary compensation the claimant receives when their Risperdal lawsuit is won. Claimants in the Risperdal lawsuit are suing for medical bills, loss of wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.

Many of the victims of Risperdal gynecomastia had to have corrective surgery, a painful, dangerous, and expensive result of the Risperdal side effects.

New Study On Risperdal Gynecomastia

The Risperdal Disaster

As one of Janssen Pharmaceutical’s best selling drugs, Risperdal prescriptions are estimated to be filled 12 million times a year in the United States.

But the history behind this antipsychotic drug is one full of scandal, deception, and harm to the public.

Initially approved for sale in 1993, Risperdal is a second generation antipsychotic prescribed for psychological issues including schizophrenia, manic episodes in bipolar disorder, and for the treatment of irritability in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Risperdal is the brand name of the generic drug risperdone.

The manufacturer of Risperdal, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., marketed it aggressively, often for unapproved or “off-label” uses.

Additionally, Janssen has been found guilty of providing illegal incentives to healthcare providers to prescribe this drug.

Given the lengthy history of unethical business practices revolving around Risperdal, it is no surprise that Risperdal has now been found to cause side effects users and physicians were not made aware of – side effects Janssen kept hidden.

Risperdal causes gynecomastia, a condition in which male breast tissue swells, often painfully, leading to the development of male breasts. This can cause physical and psychological trauma to the individual, and sometimes has to be surgically corrected.

The occurence of Risperdal gynecomastia is so high that it is suspicious that Janssen Pharmaceuticals did not seem to notice this severe Risperdal side effect in their pre-market clinical testing.

Could Janssen have possibly missed Risperdal gynecomastia? Or did they know very well it would happen, but hid it to sell more prescriptions?

New Study on Risperdal Gynecomastia

Recently, on August 6, 2014, researchers from the University of Columbia published a study on Risperdal gynecomastia in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.

Researchers in the study reviewed the medical records of over 82,000 American men between the ages of 45 and 80. They compared data between many different types of medications, and found that Risperdal was more likely to cause gynecomastia than other antipsychotic drugs.

Of 174 men on Risperdal, 27 of them developed Risperdal gynecomastia within 2 months of taking the medication. The researchers hypothesized that some users could develop Risperdal gynecomastia within as little as 2 weeks of ingesting the drug.

That means over 15% of men aged 45-80 developed Risperdal gynecomastia within two months of taking the medication.

How does this compare to another antipsychotic?

Seroquel had another surprisingly high incidence of 10% gynecomastia cases, which is still significantly lower than the Risperdal gynecomastia risk.

The Risperdal Lawsuit

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has been to court over Risperdal many times in the past, and we anticipate they will continue to be sued over the drug, and for good cause.

The Risperdal settlement in 2013 resulted in a landmark $2.2 billion fine against the company for the unlawful marketing of the drug.

Many Risperdal gynecomastia victims have already successfully sued Janssen for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages.

The Risperdal lawsuit is gaining momentum as the science continues to clarify the hidden risks of the drug.

If you have been affected by Risperdal gynecomastia, we strongly recommend that you seek legal counsel to get advice on your legal rights.

Risperdal Increases Gynecomastia Risk in Older Men

Older Men Taking Risperdal are 69% More Likely to Develop Gynecomastia

Risperdal, the brand name of risperdone is an atypical antipsychotic drug sold by Janssen Pharamaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.

Risperdal has been in the news for various scandals for over a decade now.

The most recent Risperdal problem?

Risperdal lawsuits involving gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is the swelling of breast tissue in males, leading to male breasts and sometimes nipple lactation.

Risperdal gynecomastia occurs because of a hormonal imbalance. Risperdal causes elevated levels of “prolactin,” a hormone normally seen in females. Prolactin encourages breast growth and lactation in mothers with newborns.

However, when males are exposed to unusually high quantities of prolactin, they too can grow breasts, and even lactate from the nipples. Risperdal Increases Gynecomastia Risk in Older Men

Risperdal Causes Gynecomastia in Older Men – Not Just Boys

The Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit tends to focus on adolescent boys who have developed gynecomastia as a side effect of taking Risperdal.

However, new science suggests that it’s not just teenage boys who are susceptible to Risperdal gynecomastia, older men are also at risk for developing gynecomastia when taking Risperdal.

Medscape published a new study in April of 2014 that looked into Risperdal gynecomastia in older men. The average age from the study was 65, while the actual ages ranged from 45 to 80 years old.

Researchers found that men who were taking, or had recently taken Risperdal were 69% more likely to have developed gynecomastia.

Risperdal Poses Higher Risk of Gynecomastia than Other Antipsychotic Medications

Researcher Dr. Etminan, the author of the above Risperdal gynecomastia study also looked at other antipsychotic drugs while conducting his research.

Dr. Etminan found that Risperdal poses a higher risk of gynecomastia than other antipsychotics.

Although there is some risk of gynecomastia with other antipsychotic medications, Dr. Etminan recommends healthcare providers take the Risperdal gynecomastia risk into consideration when prescribing antipsychotics.

Dr. Etminan recommends quetiapine or olanzapine instead, as these drugs pose less risk for serious adverse side effects.

Effects of Risperdal Gynecomastia

You may already know that gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue, resulting in the growth of male breasts and possibly nipple lactation. You probably are also aware that Risperdal, Janssen pharmaceutical’s antipsychotic prescription medication, has been found to cause gynecomastia, or the growth of male breasts, in boys or men who take it.

Risperdal gynecomastia is the swelling of male breast tissue, as a side effect of taking Risperdal.

The swelling can be painful, but the problems associated with effects of Risperdal gynecomastia are more psychological in nature.

Problems Associated with Risperdal Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia often develops around the time a boy or adolescent hits puberty. We all know that emotions can run high during puberty, and this is a unique time for boys and girls alike, presenting its own special challenges and wonders.

For some boys who took Risperdal however, their body began to change in an unexpected manner. While other boys were developing furry mustaches, some of the boys who took Risperdal grew breasts, to their dismay.

As one might imagine, most teenage boys would be very upset if they were to spontaneously grow breasts.

Risperdal gynecomastia can cause embarrassment and social problems.

So, exactly what effect does gynecomastia have on young boys?

Dr. Brian Labow at Boston Children’s Hospital conducted a study attempting to answer this very question. Dr. Labow administered several psychological tests to two groups of boys: one group of boys had gynecomastia and the other didn’t.

The gynecomastia group consisted of 47 boys with an average age of 16.5 years.

The boys from the gynecomastia group scored lower in the following areas:

  • physical health
  • mental health
  • self-esteem
  • eating behavior
  • social functioning

Dr. Labow found that these boys were affected by gynecomastia regardless of the severity – meaning it didn’t matter how bad the gynecomastia was, it still hurt the boys in the above mentioned areas. Mild cases were considered to be as harmful as moderate or severe cases of Risperdal gynecomastia.

Psychological aspects should not be underestimated. Risperdal gynecomastia is not necessarily medically dangerous, but it’s still a very serious problem.

Treatment of Risperdal Gynecomastia

Treatment of Risperdal gynecomastia can include hormone supplements, or surgery.

It can even go away by itself. However, scientists have shown that the increased prolactin levels (the hormonal imbalance that causes Risperdal gynecomastia) can last for up to two years.

If the enlarged breasts remain for a year or more, doctors may recommend surgery.

Sometimes the procedure can be done with liposuction. Other cases may warrant actual surgical removal of the breast tissue.

Risperdal gynecomastia often necessitates surgery to correct.

Breast removal surgery is called a mastectomy, a procedure that physically cuts out the enlarged breast tissue. It is invasive and can be dangerous.

Mastectomies are not without complications. Sometimes people react to the anesthesia used, which can be very dangerous. Other common problems associated with mastectomies are permanent scarring, misshaped breasts, blood clots, infection, and nerve damage.

The Risperdal Lawsuit

The Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit is happening is because the boys and men who have been affected by Risperdal gynecomastia are suffering. They have experienced the drawbacks of Risperdal gynecomastia, and have lost out because of it.

Janssen, the makers of this drug failed to warn the public about the risk of Risperdal gynecomastia. To make matters worse, they aggressively and illegally marketed the drug to both minors and the elderly, despite repeated warnings not to do so from the FDA.

The company behaved incredibly unethically when it comes to Risperdal, and now they are paying for their crimes.

The surgery to correct Risperdal gynecomastia is very expensive. Risperdal claimants are suing for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

If you or a loved one have developed Risperdal gynecomastia, it is time to seek legal assistance.

The manufacturers of Risperdal, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, have a long history of deceitful and illegal practices concerning Risperdal. If you have been hurt by Risperdal it is not your fault.

The makers of Risperdal have already paid out billions in settlements for their unethical marketing practices of this drug.

The Risperdal Lawsuits: An Introduction

The Risperdal Lawsuit

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic drug sold by Johnson and Johnson’s pharmaceutical unit, Janssen. It is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and is also used for irritability in children aged 5-16 with autism spectrum disorders. It is also sometimes used for the off-label use of behavioral treatment for ADHD.

The drug is one of Janssen’s best sellers, bringing in as much as over $4.5 billion in sales at its peak in 2007. However, there is a huge problem with the drug.

Some of the boys and men who take Risperdal have developed male breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia.

The Risperdal lawsuits are an attempt to seek compensation for the medical harm and losses caused by the Risperdal side effects. People affected will have to undergo medical procedures, even surgery to correct the problems caused by Risperdal. Read more detailed information on the Risperdal lawsuits below.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the development and enlargement of breast tissues in males.

It can happen on one or both sides or the chest, and may develop evenly or unevenly. It is a major source of distress, pain, and embarrassment for these (often young) men.

Risperdal can cause a number of other side effects and health problems. These side effects can include significant weight gain, and a movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia.

Click here for detailed information on the Risperdal side effects.

So imagine you have a young male child, or a loved one who is taking Risperdal for a certain psychological condition which already causes them a great deal of distress and interferes with their daily functioning. Then, to make things worse, they have been prescribed Risperdal which causes them to develop serious side effects such as serious weight gain and to everyone’s surprise, the development of female-like breasts.

The breasts growth caused by Risperdal gynecomastia is different from normal weight gain; it is the development of actual breast tissue and can even cause nipple lactation.

This can cause extreme stress, embarrassment and social impairment for the individual, who is already likely to be having a hard time because of the psychological issues.

Treatment for gynecomastia typically includes hormonal therapy and/or invasive surgery to remove the breasts.

How does Gynecomastia Happen?

Gynecomastia, or the development of male breast tissue is caused by hormonal imbalance. It is associated with the female hormone prolactin.

Prolactin typically causes the development of breasts in young women, and also triggers lactation (or breast milk) in pregnant women.

However, Risperdal has been shown to cause abnormally high levels of prolactin in men and boys. The elevated levels of prolactin caused by Risperdal can last up to two years after taking the medication, and can cause the development of male breasts and sometimes even nipple secretion.

The Risperdal Lawsuit

Men or boys who have experienced gynecomastia as a result of taking Risperdal may be entitled to file a Risperdal lawsuit. Risperdal lawsuits have already been filed with success against Janssen, and it is anticipated that many more are to follow.

A Risperdal settlement is a monetary award from the court that gives the plaintiff (the individual making the claim of Risperdal injury) compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, loss of wages, and other damages.

Victims of Risperdal gynecomastia will have to undergo hormonal therapy and likely surgery to remove the breast tissue. It is very unfortunate, risky, painful, and costly.

If you or a loved one have been affected by Risperdal gynecosmastia, we can help. Our experienced Risperdal attorneys are offering a free consultation to determine if you have a viable legal claim.
